As I write this, I realise I've technically missed a day, but when I said I'm writing a post every day, I meant I will write at least one post within each period of being awake, so this is technically Friday's post.
Now that's cleared up, I can start talking about one of my favourite things in the world. Pop music.
Yup, pop music pretty much defines me as a person. It's cheesy, it's uplifting, it can be a bit repetitive, but it'll also be stuck in your head for days.
I've loved pop music for as long as I can remember. I think everyone has a phase where they love music, but then they become self-aware about trying to be "cool" or "credible" and they stop liking it. Now, don't get me wrong, I appreciate some people simply don't like pop music, and that's cool. But my beef (yes, even someone like me can have beef) is with the people that dismiss pop music and slag it off just because it's not cool, credible, or indie enough.
Seriously, fuck off.
As a passionate pop music lover, nothing annoys me more than someone turning around and saying something along the lines of "how can you listen to that generic shit?" as soon as I say I like pop music. It's a very common thing. Pop music does have a very bad social representation in today's society, which isn't helped by how manufactured a lot of the pop industry is. But in the same way every indie musician isn't a cocaine taking shithead, not every pop musician is a manufactured puppet.
I'm a person that genuinely appreciates musicianship and talent in any genre of music. Whilst I'm not going to go out of my way to listen to a fifteen minute death metal epic, I can appreciate the work that has gone into it. A lot of people do. But pop seems to be one of the few genres that is most discriminated against as being either "simple", "easy" or "generic".
Do you know how fucking hard it is to make a catchy hook?
Making a catchy pop song is an art in exactly the same way that pouring your heart into a soft acoustic ballad is; in exactly the same way that smashing out a fifteen minutes, fingers bleedin' guitar solo is.
I will always fight my case for pop music. It's got me through a lot. It makes me happy. Pop music is attached to almost every good memory in my life. Nothing releases more endorphins in my brain than hearing a ridiculously catchy hook, then playing it about 35 times on repeat until I hate it for five months and then find it again... everyone does that right?
If it wasn't for pop music, I wouldn't be where I am today. As both the person that I am, and in the incredible position that I am life wise. When I set up Popshade I was 17, and it essentially got me my current job which I love to pieces. I plan to make more of Popshade in the next few years, but I already owe it a lot.
I plan to do a post on some of my favourite pop songs of all time over the next few weeks. But for now, where should you go to find awesome pop music? I'd suggest Shut Your Pretty Mouth and Bang Tidy! Music to begin with. And maybe Popshade... no, definitely Popshade too. Have I mentioned Popshade enough?
This will definitely come back up in another post soon. I hope you look forward to it as much as I do.
